As a consumer of 1990s sports columns and stories I’m dreading what the new-look NCAA football landscape will look like. Arch and the Manning family are showing great patience, but this will not be true for all up-and-coming 5-stars.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. (From your mom who still misses the Southwest Conference.)

Like to hear your take on the current state of sports talk radio/audio in Austin. Once there was one outlet, then two, then three, now several. 102.7 FM ESPN, AM 1300 The Zone, The (barely hanging on) Horn that is stream-only now, the upstart Texas Sports Unfiltered streamer on YouTube and app, plus an untold number of podcasts–all have their pros and cons. Do you listen to sports talk? What do you listen to throughout the day? Have you changed your listening habits in the past year?

Mary Faye thanks for reading. It’s a huge bummer what’s happened to the horn and even many of the podcasts have split off from one another to where you need to go to different feeds to find people who are staples of Longhorn sports talk like Babers or Kevin Dunn. It’s very annoying also that the games themselves are hard to get on the radio because of reception. As far as my listening or reading habits, I weirdly consume way less Texas content the better the Horns are and when there’s more uncertainty I devour the message boards (Inside Texas) and podcasts. But when there’s more certainty and I expect Texas to be good, I really only go to a few wells of information: Ian Boyd’s articles, Paul Wadlington has a great book every summer called Thinking Texas Football and I love his podcast Everyone Gets a Trophy. But come August I’ll be dialing up the various stations a little more.
