I totally agree with you especially college basketball. I do believe more long lasting fan loyalty will always be toward college than pro.
My professional sports fandom was always just location-based. With the Oilers there was a connection for the years Earl was there. And with the Cowboys it was also an admiration of Tom Landry. When Jerrah fired Landry the NFL lost me. I’ve in recent years started following Longhorns in the NFL, but I would not say I’m a pro football fan.
Spurs loyalty’s for me was Robinson, Duncan, Ginobli
, Pop, and Parker. Still a Spurs fan! Go Spurs Go!
